Examination Details: FCE (First Certificate in English) is an intermediate level Cambridge ESOL exam, at level B2 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The Cambridge First Certificate is divided into 5 parts:
Reading (Paper 1), 1 hour 15 minutes This paper is divided into 3 parts. It includes a multiple choice, gapped text and multiple matching taken from newspaper and magazine articles, reports, fiction, advertisements etc. Preparation for this section includes reading extensively, being asked pre reading questions to develop prediction techniques, preparing written and verbal reviews, learning to recognise linguistic devices e.g. cause and effect or dates and names. You will also practise reading for gist and detail, skimming and scanning and deducing meaning. Writing (Paper 2), 1 hour 30 minutes This paper is divided into 2 parts – writing a letter or email of about 160 words focussing on advising, apologising, comparing, describing, explaining, expressing opinions, justifying, persuading, recommending and suggesting. The second is a compulsory task of 120 to 150 words where you have to choose from writing an essay, a letter, a report, a review or a story. For this section you will learn to think and write for the target reader, link ideas effectively to write in a logical sequence, use a range of complex sentences, improve spelling and punctuation, organise your ideas logically and coherently. You will also learn how to write an article, email, essay, letter, report, review and story. Use of English (Paper 3), 1 hour 15 minutes This paper requires you to demonstrate your knowledge and control of the language system by completing various tasks at text and sentence level. These include multiple-choice cloze, open cloze, word formation and key word transformations. As preparation for this section you will be encouraged to read extensively to build a wide vocabulary and become familiar with the uses of different sentence structures. You will also learn guessing the meaning of words in the text, collocations, linking phrases, grammatical patterns, phrasal verbs, forming words from the root word, paraphrasing and using synonyms, Listening (Paper 4), 40 minutes (approx.) This paper contains four parts. Each part contains a recorded text or texts and corresponding comprehension tasks. Each part is heard twice. This section consists of multiple choice questions, sentence completion and multiple matching. The preparation for this section includes regular exposure to audio materials where you will get used to a range of voices, accents, styles and delivery, you will also participate in class room discussions, learn to identify stressed syllables and words in listening text and learn how to extract gist and meaning from spoken text. The texts are taken from a variety of text types including interviews, discussions, lectures and conversations. Speaking (Paper 5), 14 minutes (approx.) The Speaking Test contains four parts, including an interview section, individual long turns of about one minute, a collaborative task and a discussion. You are provided with stimulus material such as photographs and drawings. The preparation for this section includes: initiating and responding, learning to speak clearly, talking about yourself, role-playing social occasions, learning how to compare and describe, exchanging ideas, expressing and justifying opinions, agreeing and/or disagreeing, suggesting, speculating, evaluating and reaching a decision through negotiation. You will also participate in pair and group discussions, practise speaking for 1 minute, practise comparing pictures and learn to use correct connecting words when speaking.
All lessons are of 45 minutes duration. Classes are held in the morning from 09.00 to 10.30 & 11.00 to 12.30 or in the afternoon from 13.00 to 14.30 & 15.00 to 16.30. Students taking Intensive English Courses will have lessons in the morning and in the afternoon. The school reserves the right to alter any course or change the timetable if and when necessary. |
