Examination Details: CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) is an advanced level Cambridge ESOL exam, at level C1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The Cambridge Advanced Certificate is divided into 5 parts:
Reading (Paper 1), 1 hour 15 minutes This paper is divided into 4 parts. It includes a multiple choice, gapped text and multiple matching exercises taken from newspaper, reports, fiction, advertisements etc. During the course you will be encouraged to read, asked pre reading questions to develop prediction techniques and learn how to recognise linguistic devices e.g. words and phrases that indicate time, cause and effect and contrasting arguments. Furthermore you will learn how to paraphrase part of a text, make close reference to the text, and learn how to prepare questions for a specific text. The focus of preparation for this section is learning skimming and scanning, understanding of gist, detail and text structure, and deducing meaning. Writing (Paper 2), 2 hours This paper is divided into 2 parts. Part 1 consists of 1 compulsory question where you will be asked to write one of the following: an article, a report, a proposal or a letter. Part 2 consists of 1 question from a choice of 5, where you have to choose from an article, a competition entry, a contribution to a longer piece (e.g. to a book), an essay, an information sheet, a letter, a proposal, a report or a review. Preparation for this section includes learning to write information in your own words, describing, narrating, explaining, forming and giving an opinion. You will also learn about register functions, grammatical structures, vocabulary and linking ideas. Use of English (Paper 3), 1 hour 30 minutes This paper is divided into 5 parts. It consists of Multiple-choice cloze, open cloze, word formation, gapped sentences and key word transformations. As preparation for this paper you will learn to demonstrate your knowledge and control of the language system by completing various tasks at text and sentence level. Listening (Paper 4), 45 minutes (approx.) This paper is divided into 4 parts. It consists of multiple-choice questions, sentence completions and multiple matching. To prepare for this section you will participate in discussion activities in the target language, regularly be exposed to audio materials, learn to listen for gist, produce summaries of the main ideas, make predictions, identify discourse markers and have a good command of vocabulary such as, describing attitude, degrees of certainty, opinions etc. Speaking (Paper 5), 15 minutes (approx.) The Speaking test is divided into 4 parts. It consists of conversations, giving personal information, describing pictures and discussing a given topic. Preparation for this section includes participating in discussions and pair work activities, learning to react appropriately to visuals, giving personal information, exchanging information and opinions, giving reasons, speculating, agreeing and disagreeing politely, justifying opinions and negotiating, learning to speak clearly using the right pronunciation, word stress and intonation, learning to use a variety of tenses, structures and vocabulary, learning useful phrases for linking ideas, putting forward an effective argument and comparing pictures. All lessons are of 45 minutes duration. Classes are held in the morning from 09.00 to 10.30 & 11.00 to 12.30 or in the afternoon from 13.00 to 14.30 & 15.00 to 16.30. Students taking Intensive English Courses will have lessons in the morning and in the afternoon. The school reserves the right to alter any course or change the timetable if and when necessary. |
